For most people, Torfaen is probably best-known as the location of Blaenavon’s UNESCO World Heritage Site industrial landscape. Torfaen (meaning “breaker of stones”) is an old name for the river – today called Afon Lwyd (“grey river”) – which flows through the county borough from its source north of Blaenavon southward through Abersychan, Pontypool, and Cwmbran. Visitors can delve into the history of the area at the Big Pit National Coal Museum and discover the life of miners in an underground tour.
